Mercedes-Benz East London MOT

Mercedes MOT Testing

MOT Inspection for Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check that they meet the legal standards. It is not the same as having your vehicle serviced and does not check its general mechanical condition.

During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet the legal standards. You can watch the test from a viewing area but you are not allowed to interrupt the tester.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When should I get an MOT?

The MOT test ensures that your vehicle meets essential road safety and environmental standards. You are required to obtain an MOT for your vehicle either:

  • By the third anniversary of its registration.
  • On the anniversary of its last MOT if the vehicle is over three years old.

Certain vehicles, such as ambulances, taxis, or private passenger vehicles with more than eight seats, require an MOT test when they are one year old. Please be aware that driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

What’s the earliest I can get an MOT?

An MOT certificate is valid for one year. The expiry date is printed on your last MOT pass certificate. You can schedule your MOT up to one month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires, and your renewal date will remain the same.

My MOT has expired—what should I do?

If your MOT has expired, it is illegal to drive your vehicle on public roads. You could face prosecution if caught. The only exceptions are if you are driving:

  • To or from a location for repairs.
  • To a pre-arranged MOT test appointment.
How does an MOT work?

During the MOT, critical components of your vehicle will be inspected to ensure they meet legal standards. While you are welcome to observe the test from a designated viewing area, you must not interrupt the tester. Note that the MOT does not assess the condition of the engine, clutch, or gearbox. For more detailed information weather or not a vehicle has been tested, please visit MOT History Check

What happens if my vehicle fails the MOT?

Your vehicle will either pass or fail the MOT. If it fails, you will receive a list of required repairs.

  • Passing the MOT:
If your vehicle passes, you will receive an MOT certificate, and the result will be recorded in the MOT database. The certificate will also display the mileage recorded at the current and the three previous test passes (the ‘odometer reading and history’). If there is an error in the latest mileage reading, report it to the MOT centre within seven days for a replacement certificate. Earlier mileage readings cannot be corrected.

  • Failing the MOT:
If your vehicle fails, you will receive a ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate,’ and the failure will be recorded in the MOT database. If you believe the failure is unjustified, you have the right to appeal.

What happens if I drive a vehicle that has failed its MOT

You are not permitted to drive a vehicle on public roads if it fails the MOT, even if the previous certificate is still valid, except to:

  • Have the failed defects repaired.
  • Attend a pre-arranged MOT test appointment.

Driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition can result in a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban, and three penalty points on your license.

Is my vehicle exempt from MOT?

Vehicles that have not yet reached the age for their first MOT are exempt. Additionally, certain vehicles are permanently exempt from MOT testing, including:

  • Cars and motorcycles manufactured before 1960.
  • Electric-powered goods vehicles.
  • Tractors.

For a complete list of exempt vehicles, refer to form V112. If your vehicle is exempt, you will need to complete this form to tax your vehicle.
